In Spain, the environmental sector turns over more than 10.8 billion euros, equivalent to 3.2% of the global figure, or 1.2% of Spanish GDP.
The Spanish market is made up of more than 2,000 companies, the majority of which are SMEs. These employ more than 250,000 workers, most of whom are highly qualified. Specific courses are available in 11 universities and business schools that offer postgraduate environmental studies.
Greater concern for the environment has resulted in significant amounts of public regulation which has been a positive stimulus for the sector.
In terms of waste treatment, Spain is ahead of countries such as the United Kingdom, Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Italy in recycling and using alternatives to landfill.
The major Spanish multinationals in the construction and civil engineering sector are active in the environmental sector, in both waste and water treatment.
88% of the environmental technology used is of Spanish origin and Spain’s pre-eminence in water desalination is demonstrated by the sector’s exports to African, Arab and Asian countries.
However, foreign investment can play a significant role in some niche business areas where there still is scope for action, and in those where ongoing technological and process innovation is essential.
Some of these niches are encompassed in the 2007-2015 National Waste Plan (for further information, please visit the Business Opportunities tab for this sector).
