•   Desalination and water treatment equipment  (263KB)

Areas of Spain suffer from significant water shortages. This characteristic has contributed to the development of national expertise in desalination.

•   Municipal lighting  (263KB)

Public lighting in Spain accounts for about 4,700 GWh/year – or 2.7% of total national electricity consumption. Of this, 95% is in the hands of the town halls or councils.

•   Biogas from pig manure  (482KB)

More than 60 million m³ of liquid pig manure is produced in Spain each year. There is enormous potential for small biogas plants, located on site at pig farms and these can receive financial aid from the Spanish government.

•   Advanced compact stations for small communities  (506KB)

The National Water Quality Plan 2008-2015 requires that advanced waste water treatment plants are used in small communities, with populations below 2,000, located in ‘sensitive areas’ or in areas that fall within the Natura 2000 network.

Compliance with the Water Framework Directive would be much easier with sophisticated modelling tools for river bed analysis and pollutant control. Particular opportunities exist for thermal imaging and satellite systems.

In Spain, every year, approximately a quarter of a million used tires are discarded. Fewer than 10% of these are retreaded, around 50% are re-used in other applications and around 40% are used to generate energy or heat.

Waste plastic is a valuable resource but much of it ends up in landfill when it could be used as a source of new material, through recycling, or as a source of energy (through Waste to Energy processes).

Each year, around a million vehicles are scrapped in Spain. This translates into 900,000 tons of waste, much of it hazardous. Business opportunity in new processes for treating of the tons of waste are not recovered at present.
