The installation of a network of environmental indicators will provide detailed information on the environmental evolution of the Ebro Delta in real time, and on the state of conservation and the dynamics of its aquatic ecosystems. The project was awarded by the state agency Acuamed (Mediterranean Drainage Basins Waters) and has a budget of 12 million euros. It is the first of its kind and size to be undertaken in Spain.
A complex network of environment indicators will enable the state of conservation and the dynamics of the Ebro Delta aquatic ecosystems to be ascertained; the quality of surface and aquifer water, the creation of a historical data record, the provision of a tool aiding decision making and the monitoring of environmental actions that are undertaken in the area.
To this end, around 60 monitoring points will be installed in the Ebro Delta equipped with sensors employing a range of technologies and monitors for the acquisition, elaboration and transmission of measurements to the data processing center. The project plans to integrate a wide range of technologies including sensors, monitoring equipment, satellite tele-detection, fixed and mobile radar systems, communications networks, IT monitoring and control applications (SCADA system) and business intelligence, amongst others.
The project will also involve the design, development and installation of the Data Processing Center, where the information transmitted by the monitoring points will be sent, managed and published on a website. In addition a laboratory analysis service is to be set up to monitor the quality of the waters.
