Bayer opens a microbiology lab in Alcala de Henares, Madrid

The new microbiology laboratory is part of the Berlimed plant, located in the municipality of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), and it is the only center of the group at the global level that produces and develops soft gelatin capsules. With this expansion of the plant, the Bayer group promotes Berlimed as the global strategic center and reinforces the German company’s commitment to Spain.

With the new microbiology center, Berlimed’s plant increases its surface by over 200 s.q.m. in order to boost the production capacity and to respond to the planned increase in production from 800 million capsules per year to 1,200 million in 2014. Since Berlimed began operations in 1998, the plant has doubled its workforce, going from 150 employees at the beginning to 300 employees at present.

With over 13.000 s.q.m. Berlimed is considered to be one of the most modern production plants in Europe. The plant has cutting-edge technology, a leading R+D center, and it is also distinguished by its strong social and environmental commitment.

Berlimed is part of the Bayer group, and according to Rainer Krause, Managing Director of Bayer Hispania: “Spain is an important country for Bayer. The sales in the Iberian region (Spain and Portugal) position us within the group as the fourth most relevant area in Europe and the eighth in the world.”
