SMP employs over 1,100 people at its five factories in Spain, and has another two through a joint venture with Celulosa Fabril (Cefa)
What is Spain's importance in SMP's strategy?
The Indian company of automobile components Samvardhana Motherson Peguform (SMP) is a leading expert in plastic materials injection technologies. It is specialized in products like steering cabins, door panels, bumper modules and other plastic vehicle bodywork parts. Thanks to its position as a partner of automotive manufacturer brands which it serves, SMP is present in Europe, China, Mexico, Brazil and the United States.
The parent group, Samvardhana Motherson Group, was founded in 1975 and today is one of the world's 26 largest automotive industry suppliers, with over 100,000 employees in over 230 factories in 33 countries across all continents, and sales of USD 9.1 billion between 2016-2017.
Samvardhana Motherson Group has a total of nine facilities in Spain, five of which are SMP, including two as a joint venture. Bearing in mind that revenues generated between 2016-2017 by SMP global amounted to 3 billion, we must mention that approximately 24% of its revenues and 14% of its profitability are generated by its Spanish factories. Therefore, we can highlight that Spain, from a strategic perspective, has been an important country from the start of Motherson's journey.
What infrastructure do you have in Spain?
We have five SMP plants: Samvardhana Motherson Peguform Barcelona, located in Martorell, with about 350 employees; SMP Automotive Technologies Teruel, mainly an assembly plant with about 60 employees; Castellbisbal (Barcelona), with about 150 employees; Palencia, with about 250 employees; and Polinyá (Barcelona), with about 310 employees. Furthermore, through a joint venture with Cefa, we have one in Figueruelas and another in Zaragoza, and outside SMP, the group has another two factories in Spain: SMR Automotive Systems Spain, in Zaragoza, and Motherson Sintermetal Products in Ripollet (Barcelona). The main products manufactured in Spain are bumpers, spoilers, door panels, control panels and steering cabins.
Which client profiles do you supply?
SMP España's largest client in Spain is Volkswagen group (about 80%), and in a lesser proportion we are also suppliers of Opel and Ford. SMP Spain takes advantage of any opportunity to exhibit and demonstrate its support as strategic provider in our clients' growth and success.
What projects do you currently have underway and what are the upcoming challenges?
Samvarthana Motherson Group plans to grow and duplicate its global size by 2020. We want to be where our clients are, and this brings us closer to our vision of becoming a benchmark solutions provider on a global scale. This is promising news for all of the members of SMG and no doubt this growth surge will reach the Spanish region, which offers enormous potential.
