The Chinese government has selected the town of Alcorcón to build an international healthcare center, the first one to offer integrated medicine combining traditional Chinese and Western medicine. It will also have a university, a congress and exhibition center and a research center, all of which will be aimed at promoting traditional Chinese medicine.
The new center will be spread over 60,000 square meters in the neighborhood of Ensanche Sur in Alcorcón, with a budget of €300 million. It is the only project of its kind that is fully supported by the Chinese government.
The International Healthcare Center of Alcorcón (IHCA) will be funded by the Chinese government and several private Chinese investors as part of the One Belt, One Road fund, known as the Silk Road in Spain, created by President Xi Jinping. This center and the China-Madrid train are the first two projects that come to fruition in Spain as part of this investment program.
The idea of opening a traditional Chinese healthcare center came up in 2008, and a year later a cooperation agreement was signed between the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM) and the company China Europe Business Development Services (CEBDS).
According to this agreement, CEBDS would be in charge of opening an international healthcare center in Europe combining traditional Chinese medicine and Western medical care, to prove that although they have completely different perspectives and approaches, both forms of treatment can be complementary to each other.
After a few years conducting an in-depth analysis, CEBDS selected Spain as the best location for this center. The company held several meetings with the local authorities of Alcorcón and representatives of the Chinese government, and they chose this town in Madrid. The talks were supported by ICEX, Invest Madrid and the Regional Department for Health of Madrid.
Several Chinese medical institutions and universities are going to take part in the project. Professional Spanish organizations and companies will be able to join too, and some have already shown their interest.
