Griffith Foods has built a new production and product development center and kitchens in Valls, which will replace the one they had until now in the nearby plant at Puigpelat, also in the province of Tarragona. The transfer is planned to conclude before the end of this six-month period, and will involve an increase in the staff from the current 51 employees to a total of 72.
In addition to hiring people in the area, the company has joined forces with local agencies to provide occupational training for the unemployed, so they will have the opportunity to be recruited in the future.
The Valls plant is increasing its capacity to blend dried condiments and will enhance Griffith’s sauce production and packaging capabilities. The aim is to satisfy the growing demand for these products all over Europe. It is also designed to achieve Halal certification, to allow the brand to sell its sauces and condiments outside Europe.
“Before designing our new production plant, we launched a market study to understand not only the product requirements, but also capabilities like packaging to ensure we can deliver what our customers need”, explains Kristel Moens, Griffith Foods' marketing manager for Europe.
The first steps in the transfer project were made in the summer of 2014, when Griffith Foods acquired an empty warehouse in Valls, on which it has built the new facility. In addition to the manufacturing areas of the sauce and sauce blend, the new factory includes a kitchen and the capacity to develop new products.
According to Àlex Astruc, manager of the Valls plant, the company originally thought of enlarging their facilities in Puigpelat, but the vice chairman at the time, Brian Griffith, challenged them to grow: “As we completed market studies, we realized the best course of action was to create a new plant that supports growth for coming decades”.
Griffith Foods came to Spain in 1982 through the leadership of Dean Griffith, the third generation of this family to lead the firm. Today his son, Brian Griffith, is at the head of the company.
