Foreign direct investment in Spain grew by 36% in 2016

Spain received 18,659 million dollars in foreign direct investment in 2016, according to data of the World Investment Report of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

This quantity represents a 36% increase with regards to figures registered for year 2015 (11,910 million dollars). Hence, Spain holds 19th position in the yearly ranking of greatest FDI home economies in the world (18th if one excludes Hong Kong by virtue of sovereignty).

On the other hand, Spain’s foreign direct investment stock is equivalent to 556,604 million dollars, which situates it as the 15th most promising FDI home economy on a worldwide level (13th if one excludes Hong Kong or the British Virgin Islands by virtue of sovereignty).

Additionally, Spain has re-entered the top 15 in UNCTAD ranking as top prospective destination. Spain holds twelfth position as top prospective destination for the inflow of international investments.

It is very striking to highlight that Spain, in terms of flows, has obtained 9th position in the ranking of greatest investors on a global level. Spanish companies have invested abroad almost 42,000 million dollars. It is an extraordinary figure, although slightly less than the figure registered in 2015, year in which it invested more than 44,000 million.
