Bayer is celebrating its anniversary. Its emblematic aspirin is 120 years old and La Felguera plant (Asturias), specialized in producing this key product, is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a four million euro investment to renovate and upgrade the facilities.
La Felguera plant has produced 100% of the acetylsalicylic acid consumed around the globe since 2014, and exports it to eight production centers where the tablets are packaged into different formats. This makes the plant the benchmark for Aspirin production.
The plant's origins are linked to the coalfield where it is located as the raw materials to make acetylsalicylic acid are, after several distillations and treatments, extracted from coal. Nonetheless, production of the main ingredient took ten years to be added to the production line and it was not until 1952 that the plant became the top center in Spain dedicated to this drug, which the World Health Organization described in 2005 as an essential medication for its therapeutic benefits on migraines, pain and preventing heart attacks and cardiovascular events.
On a visit to the plant alongside local politicians to celebrate its anniversary, Bayer Hispania CEO Rainer Krause stated: "This anniversary celebrates the constant commitment to innovation and the work of employees, who have incorporated progress into the strength and safety of production processes at this emblematic plant, to become a Bayer benchmark plant around the globe".
The four million euro that Bayer announced at the start of 2017 would be invested at the factory will be used to improve facilities and create a new office block at the complex. Bayer also announced that it expects to start production of imidacloprid this year - one of the active ingredients of the medication to prevent canine leishmaniasis.
Jorge Álvarez, director of the plant that employs 150 workers, explained that "the success of the plant cannot be understood without the immense work of all its employees. Our staff have evolved alongside technology and the transformation of the industry. It is thanks to them that La Felguera is today a benchmark and consolidated plant in Bayer's global strategy".
