British company Global Switch, a specialist in data centre development and operations since 1998, has begun construction of its second data centre in Madrid. The launch of this project, the company says, marks a new chapter in its growth in what it describes as one of Europe’s leading digital infrastructure markets.

Madrid 2 will become operational in 2029 and reach full capacity in 2032. Situated in a prime location in the capital’s so-called Silicon Alley, home to numerous technology companies, it has been designed to meet the growing demands of AI, cloud and high-performance computing.

70 MW campus
Once completed, the facility will have a capacity of 56 MW, bringing the campus total to 70 MW when combined with the 14 MW at Madrid 1 in the adjacent building. With a floor area of 24,000 square metres, it will support artificial intelligence, cloud computing and high-performance computing activities.

As digital infrastructure requirements continue to evolve, Madrid 2 will play a key role in supporting the next generation of workloads and connectivity needs across the region.

New centre construction
Zaragoza-based Eigo Construcciones is responsible for building the new data centre as the main contractor.

Madrid 1 was built in 2000 and has undergone several expansions, with further upgrades currently planned through to 2027. The building has a floor area of 12,000 square metres, bringing the total campus area to 36,000 square metres.
