94% of foreign businesses expect to increase or maintain levels of investment in Spain over 2015

The “Foreign Investors Business Climate Barometer” indicates that foreign businesses have improved their assessment of the Spanish business climate, with an average mark of 2.9 out of 5. The barometer was jointly published by ICEX-Invest in Spain, Multinacionales Por Marca España and the IESE International Center for Competitiveness (ICC). Its eight edition has become a leading publication for foreign investment in Spain.

The barometer examines the opinions of over 500 foreign companies on Spain's business climate and how much importance they attach to it, identifying strengths they consider should be maintained and areas where further effort is required.
According to the study, 94% of the foreign companies surveyed expect to increase or maintain their levels of investment in Spain over 2015. Likewise, the outlook for employment also improves with the percentage of companies expecting to increase or maintain their workforce in Spain rising from 87% in 2014 to 91% this year. In terms of turnover, 91% of those surveyed expect their revenues to increase.

In terms of export volume, the outlook is very positive, with almost all the export companies surveyed expecting to maintain the upward trend in sales to other markets. Just 3% of companies expect to see exports diminish, due in part to growing domestic demand.

The barometer also presents trends detected in the origin of company capital. For instance, German, UK and French companies have investment plans for Spain slightly above those of the average of the companies surveyed. German and Italian companies make up the largest percentage of companies expecting to increase or maintain their workforce over 2015. Companies with German or US capital are the most optimistic in terms of increasing revenues for the coming years.

Infrastructure and human capital are considered the main strengths
The most positive aspect continues to be infrastructure, followed by human capital and quality of life. In terms of infrastructure, airports and high-speed rail links have received high marks. In terms of human capital, the availability of qualified workforce and the quality of business schools are elements that have received the highest consideration by investors. All the areas assessed have received higher marks compared to the Barometer for 2014.
Furthermore, the barometer identifies the areas which still require greater effort according to investors. This year, aspects related to financing are not included among the main areas for improvement as was the case for previous years, having being replaced by the costs of electricity.

We have marked as priority areas those that present a greater difference between the importance afforded and the average mark given by investors. In this sense, the lack of foreign language skills continues to be the main problem, while matching labor legislation to company needs is no longer raised as a concern.
