Amazon is set to open a software development center in Madrid which will be used to design new features and services for its five European websites and its mobile apps. This will be the brand's only center in Europe dedicated exclusively to this work.
Amazon will put together its new technical team by recruiting 50 engineers who will be responsible for improving the customer purchasing experience, developing innovations in both the field of customization and machine learning, and advanced searches. They will also design specific new solutions for Amazon Premium members.
Amazon is currently in the process of selecting highly qualified professionals with software engineering profiles, quality engineers, program managers and systems engineers.
According to Terry Hanold, international vice president of technology at Amazon, “Spain has a large pool of engineers who have shown great doses of talent and creativity. We are happy to create a technology team in Madrid able to develop new features for our customers in Spain, Europe and around the world”.
François Nuyts, managing director of Amazon.es, says: “We are particularly proud to announce that many of the new services and features that will change the shopping habits of millions of European consumers are going to be developed here in Madrid. In Spain we've found professionals with great talent and an incredible desire to innovate. Amazon has a long-term commitment to the Spanish economy and we intend to continue investing and creating employment here”.
According to Manuela Carmena, mayor of Madrid, “This is magnificent news, and reaffirms the trend whereby Madrid is seen as one of the most attractive cities in the world for investing and innovating”. She adds: “Our most important capital is the talent and creativity of the people of Madrid, and being chosen by Amazon –one of the world's leading logistics and technology companies– is a valuable endorsement for our city. Amazon's arrival will increase the value of the AZCA area and enhance the ongoing project to convert the square into a vast innovation hub”.
Amazon's new software development center will share a space of 1,700 square meters in the Paseo de la Castellana with the B2B development center, the company's only technology hub dedicated exclusively to supporting Amazon Business outside the United States. It has been in operation in the Spanish capital since May 2015, and has over 30 engineers.
Amazon, which has created 800 permanent jobs since it started operating in Spain at the end of 2011, is expanding its logistics center in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) with the construction of a new building with an area of 45,000 square meters, which is expected come on line in the second half of the year. The US company will create 1,000 jobs in the coming three years in this logistics center alone.
