Alstom will design and build the trains of the future in Spain

Alstom has announced the creation of what it describes as the first 4.0 factory in the railway sector in Spain, in Santa Perpetua de Mogoda (Barcelona). This process of digital transformation is designed to integrate all the latest technologies and enhance its workforce.

The process, also described as the “fourth industrial revolution”, consists of applying smart systems based on the 3D design to the production processes and implementing new manufacturing execution systems (MES), additive manufacturing, sensorization of equipment, robotics and augmented reality, among other technologies.

With these new technologies, Alstom aims to improve its chains and production processes and increase its competitiveness in order to design and manufacture the trains of the future and improve the experience of travelers, drivers and operators.

The company's industrial center in Santa Perpetua de Mogoda will also be extended by 30,000 square meters to include premises that will be available to suppliers. The idea is to improve the integration of the logistics and design chain, streamline the processes, and make it possible to work together on innovation and design, thus promoting the relationship between supplier and manufacturer.

Antonio Moreno, CEO of Alstom, says: “We are facing a great opportunity for companies, people and economies. Alstom has always been a pioneering company, and is now determined to be one of the architects of this new industrial era in Spain”.

The plant in Santa Perpetua was opened in 1994 and is the most modern in the group in Spain. It is also one of the few Alstom plants equipped to manufacture high-speed, regional and subway trains and trams in the same facilities.

All the Alstom trains in use in Spain have come from this plant, including the trains for the Madrid-Seville high-speed line, the regional shuttles, the driverless subway in Barcelona and most of the trams operating today in Spain. It also exports 90% of its output, with orders from Australia, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
