Hitachi Energy builds new transformer plant in Spain

The company will invest 30 million euros in the new facilities in Zaragoza, which it will move to in 2027.

Hitachi Energy has announced the construction of a new dry transformer factory in Zaragoza to replace its existing facilities. The new plant will increase the current surface area to over 22,000 square metres, with a consequent increase in production capacity. It will also be more modern and environmentally friendly.

The company, a subsidiary of Japan's Hitachi, will invest 30 million euros in this project, construction of which is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The future plant will be located in the Zaragoza Logistics Platform (Plaza) and will be LEED Gold certified, which recognises sustainable architectural design, ensuring a balance between care for the environment, social wellbeing and economic growth.

Energy transition and sustainable growth
Verónica Ruiz, head of Hitachi Energy's distribution and traction transformer business in Europe, explains that this project, “which is part of the company's global plan to invest over 1.5 billion dollars to increase global transformer production, demonstrates the confidence placed in the Zaragoza team and our commitment to enabling energy transition and sustainable growth”.

In addition to construction, the investment will include incorporating new machinery and automation to increase production capacity and meet the growing demand for transformers. When commissioned, it will also create new jobs.

Decarbonisation of energy systems
Transformers are one of the most important elements in the energy value chain because they enable efficient transmission and distribution of electricity and facilitate the decarbonisation of energy systems. They are a key component in applications such as renewable energy integration, grid interconnections, data centre power supply and transport electrification.

In particular, the dry transformers that will be produced at the new Aragonese plant do not use oil to maintain their temperature, making them safer and more environmentally friendly.

Alfredo García-Borreguero, Head of Hitachi Energy Spain, explains, “Electricity will be the backbone of the entire energy system. The transformer investments in Spain reinforce our commitment to meeting growing global demand, with the necessary speed and scale, while creating a positive impact on local communities”.
