The US company will increase its investment in Spain to 33.7 billion euros.

Amazon Web Services continues to invest in Aragon, where the AWS Europe Region is located, and made up of three data centres in the provinces of Zaragoza and Huesca. The company has announced that it will increase its investments in Spain to 33.7 billion euros, and the first to benefit will be the Aragon data centre infrastructure, which it plans to expand and strengthen.

In addition to opening new data centres, the tech firm also plans to build supply chain-related facilities, whose purpose will be to provide direct support for the operations of these centres, both in Spain and across Europe. Once they are fully operational, the company estimates they will create around 1,800 jobs in the region, including direct, indirect and induced jobs.

Among the support facilities announced, the project includes a factory for the assembly and final testing of servers, a logistics warehouse, and a facility for the manufacture and repair of AI and machine learning servers.

The company says that its electricity consumption has been offset since 2022 with 100% renewable energy, and it is currently investing in 100 solar and wind projects across Spain, 17 of them in Aragon. As for the water consumption of its data centres, it emphasises its commitment to return to communities more than it uses in its direct operations by 2030.

In Aragon, AWS has invested 17.2 million euros in support of five water projects, “Detection and reduction of water losses caused by leaks in ageing pipes, increasing the flow of reused water for local farms, implementation of an innovative flood management system for Zaragoza, giving farmers access to an AWS-based AI solution to maximise crop yields while reducing the water footprint, and modernisation of a crucial water pipeline for Huesca”.

Spain’s first high-demand distribution centre
Amazon, the tech company’s parent company, has in the meantime announced the construction of a new logistics centre in Zaragoza, in which it has invested more than 100million euros and which will create over 600 jobs. This is the first distribution centre for high-demand products to be launched in Spain, and it will begin operations in September.

Covering an area of more than 30,000 square metres, the new distribution centre will focus on optimising the supply chain through the strategic storage of the best-selling products. In this way, it will ensure a steady flow of inventory to the rest of Spain’s logistics centres and accelerate delivery times.
