Spain approves National Green Algorithms Plan to develop eco-friendly technology

It will receive an investment of 278 million euros from the Next Generation EU funds
The Government of Spain has adopted the National Green Algorithms Programme, a commitment under the Recovery Plan that will receive an investment of 278 million euros from the Next Generation EU funds to develop environmentally friendly technology guided by sustainability criteria and aimed at the development of actions to combat climate change.
In order to foster Green by Design Artificial Intelligence, the plan seeks to ensure that environmental sustainability criteria are included from the design and initial development of the algorithm. This will help harness the synergies that exist between the twin green and digital transitions.
Artificial intelligence provides improvements in the analysis of information and decision-making, which leads to better monitoring of trends and impacts on the environment; helping, for example, to reduce energy and resource consumption, foster decarbonisation and promote the circular economy.
Despite the huge potential of artificial intelligence to provide solutions to these highly significant challenges for Spain, the threats that it poses should not be ignored. These include the high energy cost that its construction might entail and concerns over issues such as the potential global electricity consumption that will be required by ICT in 2030, and other blockchain-related tools.
The programme will be implemented in the 2023-2025 period, with a total budget of 278 million euros, and it seeks to position Spain at the cutting edge of development for more environmentally responsible AI by supporting top research centres and the economic fabric in the country.
National Artificial Intelligence Strategy
The National Plan on Green Algorithms forms part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, the Digital Spain 2026 Agenda and the Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
The main goal of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy is to encourage the development of AI and thereby lay the foundations for creating an ecosystem of excellence capable of supporting scientific research and innovation and the development of skills and talent. This being in addition to the roll-out of data platforms and technology infrastructure, their integration into the economic fabric, their increased use in the public sector and the establishment of an ethical and regulatory framework.
The National Plan on Green Algorithms is also aligned with the values upheld by the European Union and enshrined in the Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence published by the European Commission in 2021, which fosters the use of greener artificial intelligence.
