Oracle opens first Spanish cloud region in Madrid

The US company announces that a second infrastructure will open in Spain in 2023

Oracle has set up its first Spanish cloud region in Madrid, as announced by Invest in Spain back in February. This is the seventh infrastructure of its kind in the European Union and the 40th worldwide. It will respond to a growing need for business services required by all types of organisations based in Spain, both public and private, and in sectors ranging from health to financial services, education and retail.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) regions are characterised by offering a wide range of services that help customers to modernise their applications, innovate through data and analytics, and migrate mission-critical workloads from their data centres to the US company’s cloud. Its customers include companies such as BBVA, Grupo EULEN, Día, Grupo Piñero and Barcelona Health Hub.

A new cloud region in Spain in 2023
“Local organisations and public institutions are taking firm steps to establish Spain as a country focused on technology-driven innovation,” explained Albert Triola, CEO of Oracle Spain. In response, Oracle Cloud Madrid Region will offer its customers a catalogue of over 100 services designed to improve IT and operational efficiency, get faster insights from their data, and build and deploy cloud-native applications.

Many companies are already deploying resilient applications in multiple locations to ensure protection against potential problems. The location of the new cloud region is particularly important, because it allows for confidential data to be stored without the need for hosting outside Spain. In fact, Oracle plans to open a new cloud region in Spain in 2023.

Sustainable cloud
One of the special features of the new Madrid cloud region is that it is one of the company’s first to run on 100% renewable energy. Oracle expects all its cloud regions to replicate this model by 2025.

The network of cloud regions already includes 75 partners, ensuring that customers of the FastConnect service can connect directly to their virtual cloud network via dedicated, private and high-bandwidth connections. The partner that will provide this service in the Madrid region is Interxion.

Security and business continuity
According to Mateo Ramón, CIO of Grupo Piñero, one of Oracle’s customers in the hotel industry, there are some capabilities that his company can only achieve in the cloud. He said, “Our journey to the cloud with Oracle was completed in less than a year, enabling us to maintain security and business continuity. A local cloud region will further benefit our strategy, helping us reduce service latencies, secure the regulatory framework for data, and combine a variety of cloud services to meet our business challenges.”

Oracle’s partners include Spain’s Telefónica Tech, whose CEO of Cybersecurity and Cloud, María Jesús Almazor, explained, “One of the key drivers for success in the cloud market is to help our customers embrace the cloud to grow their businesses, offering a comprehensive and differentiated portfolio with the support of benchmark partners. Our partnership with Oracle will allow us to expand our cloud services and strengthen our strategic positioning in PaaS, as well as reinforcing our database and the value proposition of our middleware applications with one of the market leaders.”
