Amazon opens logistics centre in Asturias with state-of-the-art robotics

This has involved an investment of 300 million euros and will generate 1,500 jobs

Amazon has built a new logistics centre in Siero (Asturias), the first in the region and equipped with the most advanced technology developed by Amazon Robotics. The investment made by the US multinational in this infrastructure has exceeded 300 million euros. In its first three years of activity, it will generate around 1,500 jobs in more than 60 different activities.

The Amazon Robotics Sortable (ARS) centre will complement the activity initiated in 2019 by a company delivery station. With a surface area of over 175,000 square metres, it will start operations next September. In its first stage, the workforce will be around 400 people. Applications are now open for positions in the areas of engineering, human resources, information technology, health, safety, finance, reception, packing and shipping.

Robotising repetitive and strenuous tasks
A robotised area covering almost 40,000 square metres has been created in the new centre, equipped with advanced technologies such as palletising robots that avoid staff having to lift loads manually and automated guided vehicles that transport items autonomously. These robots reduce the amount of time employees spend walking and pushing and pulling trolleys and containers.

In addition to eliminating the need to carry heavy loads and perform repetitive tasks, the technologies introduced by Amazon Robotics allow people to focus on jobs that robots are unable to do. Amazon's European Advanced Technology Team is one of the parties involved in achieving these developments. Since it was created in 2019, this team has introduced more than 550 developments and driven investment of over 400 million euros across Amazon's logistics centres in Europe.

Quality employment and economic activity
The President of the Principality, Adrián Barbón, welcomed the announcement of the forthcoming opening, “There is no better confirmation of success than the start of business activity. They are the protagonists, the ones who must report on their projects. We, as the Government of the Principality, are committed to giving them constant and silent support, because what really interests us is that investments like this materialise to create quality employment and economic activity in order to strengthen the business fabric of Asturias.”

The head of the new logistics centre, Carlos Ordeig, said, “We are very proud to announce the opening of our Siero centre, which will boost talent and employment in the region. Thanks to this centre, we will offer a wide range of quality employment options and create job opportunities for all kinds of people.”
