The company allocated €114.8 million to this item and increased its workforce by 5.5% to surpass 1,830 employees.
German biopharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, specializing in human and animal health, has presented its 2025 financial results in Spain. Its figures highlight investment in research, development, and innovation (R&D&I), having grown 9% compared with the previous financial year and reaching €114.8 million, a record for this item in Spain.
Boehringer Ingelheim’s Spanish headquarters, located in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona), has established itself in recent years as a strategic international hub. Alongside the headquarters, it combines two pharmaceutical manufacturing plants that export to more than 80 countries, 2 R&D&I units, and four international hubs: one for IT, one for digital services, another for regulatory affairs, and the newly created Data & Analytics hub.
Cutting-edge technologies
The new data and analytics hub is tasked with tackling large-scale data analysis through the use of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence. Its goal is to drive innovation, ensure operational efficiency, and improve patient outcomes.
In the field of clinical research, the company invested €19.3 million last year in international clinical development, with 97 trials, 32 of which were led by the Spanish team. This figure cements the Spanish subsidiary’s position as the Group’s third-ranking country in terms of the number of clinical trials, and second for the most cancer research. They had the participation of 101 Spanish healthcare centers and more than 775 patients.
Real, disruptive solutions
Boehringer Ingelheim’s Head of Medicine and R&D in Spain, Marian Meeusen, says that Spain “has become firmly established as a strategic driving force in the company’s global research strategy. The excellence of our professionals and the strength of Spain’s healthcare ecosystem allow us to keep driving innovation so that our pipeline can be transformed into real, disruptive solutions for diseases with clinical needs that are still unmet.”
The growth of the Spanish subsidiary also translated into employment growth. The company’s workforce grew by 5.5% in Spain in 2025 and surpassed 1,830 employees. Boehringer Ingelheim also highlights its strong commitment to equal opportunities, with 51% of the workforce being women, not only in junior roles but also in leadership positions.
