Since its arrival in Spain, Huawei has created 1,000 direct and 1,600 indirect jobs

Huawei Technologies Co. (Huawei) has been operating in Spain since 2001, when it launched its activities through a commercial representative office. In 2004, the company founded the subsidiary Huawei Technologies S.L. (Huawei Spain), thereby underlining its commitment to both remain and expand in the Spanish market.

How did Huawei first set out in Spain?
Huawei launched its operations in Spain in 2001, through a commercial representative office. Since then, the company has been developing its lines of business and establishing itself as a key organization in the Spanish ICT sector, seeking to contribute towards Spain's digital transformation, as well meet our customers' requirements and expectations. In 2004, we thus created the subsidiary Huawei Spain, thereby underlining our commitment to both remain and expand in the Spanish market. We now have a head office in Madrid, along with five further offices in Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, La Coruña and Bilbao. The company also has various joint innovation centers in Spain with Telefónica and Vodafone. Huawei Spain is focused on providing customers with cutting-edge ICT solutions and services. Our product portfolio includes wireless, fixed-line network and network core solutions, data network technology, apps, software and terminals.

How much investment have you made so far and how many jobs have you created?

The short and medium term business expectations are positive, as there will be sustained growth in all three areas of business. Spain is a key market for Huawei, in which we will continue investing and safeguarding our position as a benchmark company in the ICT sector. However, our contribution in Spain is not limited to driving the digital transformation. We are also putting considerable effort into creating jobs. Since embarking in Spain in 2001, we have created a workforce of 1,000 employees, of which 85% are local. What is more, we are currently generating 1,600 indirect jobs. We also have a firm commitment to promoting talent within the ICT sector as well as improving employability. In this regard, 70 interns have joined Huawei in 2015 alone, within the framework of programs such as "Liderando la Era LTE" (Leading the LTE Age) and university/business agreements. In line with our strategy, we continue working to increase the number of employment opportunities at Huawei.

Evaluation of its sector in Spain. Market positioning and advantages over competitors.
ICTs are a key factor in business competitiveness in Spain, enabling innovation as well as redefinition of the market. In just 15 years, Huawei has become a benchmark on the Spanish technology scene as well as in the industry's digital transformation, with innovation being its added value over competitors. The company has pursued its activity while firmly integrating itself in the industrial ecosystem and contributing toward the growth and strengthening thereof through innovation. Since its founding in 1987, every year Huawei has invested worldwide at least 10% of its annual sales revenues in R+D. Over the last 10 years, the company has invested more than $30 billion in R+D worldwide. Huawei also has a clear customer focus, from telecommunications operators and the business environment through to the end customer. In this respect, as regards the consumer business unit, I should highlight the new "wearables" or high-end terminals; in the business of telecommunications network infrastructure, I would give special mention to our investment in 4.5G and our vision for 5G and, lastly, as regards the public and private business sector, IP solutions, storage, and IOT or Cloud Computing.

What major product launches are you preparing for this year?
Huawei will be focusing on products and solutions related to certain trends which, from the company's point of view, are set to define 2016. In terms of consumer goods, this year will see major launches of new devices that will continue to meet the high expectations of consumers. Users will be amazed by the new Mate 8, as its battery represents a huge step forward in terms of quality, as well as other features that will soon be revealed. As regards the carrier business unit, 5G represents the next generation of ultra-high speed wireless networks that will drive the technology of tomorrow and have a major impact on the ICT industry. Huawei is a pioneer in the promotion of this technology and we are therefore investing heavily in R+D. On a final note, the Internet of Things intelligently connects humans, devices and systems and, as with previous trends (computers, Internet, mobile communications), it is currently the mainstream of the ICT industry. At Huawei, we believe the Internet of Things is already having a major impact on our lives and is set to become an intrinsic part of such areas as electricity, transport, industrial control, commerce, healthcare, and resource management.
