Toyota Material Handling España has more than 600 employees working on strategic automation and digitalisation projects.

Toyota Material Handling España, a subsidiary of Toyota Material Handling Europe since 2007, is a leader in the sale and rental of forklifts in Spain and has established itself as a specialist in logistics automation and digitalisation. Its activities range from traditional material handling to the end-to-end automation of warehouses, with solutions that combine AGVs (automated guided vehicles), AMRs (autonomous mobile robots), AutoStore (an automated storage and retrieval system), SWARM collaborative robotics (swarm robotics) and proprietary software for the intelligent management of fleets and flows.

The company is driving a model of connected and autonomous logistics, where data integration, artificial intelligence and predictive analytics are key to optimising processes and anticipating customer needs. This approach gives it the role of a global technology partner in the sector’s transformation towards more efficient, safer and more competitive operations.

How has Toyota Material Handling’s Spanish subsidiary evolved over its nearly twenty-year history?

Toyota Material Handling España, founded in 2007, drives forward more innovative and sustainable logistics, aligned with the vision of Sakichi Toyoda, founder of Toyota. Present in 44 European markets, it established itself in 2025 as the leader in the sale and rental of forklift trucks in Spain, with more than 600employees and a network of 11 branches. Its headquarters in Sabadell (Barcelona), which opened in 2024, serves as a hub for innovation, training and after-sales service. It is complemented by new facilities in Seville, as well as in Castile and León, and by pioneering advanced automation projects where the combination of automated guided vehicles, artificial intelligence and digital flow control sets a new operational standard in the sector, confirming the company’s sustained growth.

Several projects related to automation were launched in 2025. What milestone does this mark in your track record?

The drive for automation marks a turning point in our trajectory, as we move from being an equipment supplier to a technology partner capable of designing integrated solutions for all types of logistics operations. In 2025, we consolidated projects that combine AGV/AMR and intelligent management systems to optimise flows, reduce times and increase safety. Our technology, which is flexible and scalable, can be integrated into any facility and grows in line with each customer. Thanks to tools such as T-ONE, we connect everything from manual equipment to AutoStore and SWARM within a single digital ecosystem, turning automation into a strategic lever for smarter, more efficient logistics.

What other important projects have you recently developed?

Toyota Material Handling España has supported numerous companies in optimising their operations with tailored solutions and shared innovation. Recent projects include the new automated intralogistics platforms, where the combination of mobile robotics, artificial intelligence and centralised control software is transforming the way materials are moved in warehouses. We have also promoted social and local initiatives, such as collaboration with the Red Cross in Badia del Vallès (Barcelona) and the opening of new branches in Seville, as well as in Castile and León, all conceived in line with sustainability and energy efficiency criteria.

What infrastructure do you have in Spain?

Toyota Material Handling España has offices in Barcelona and Madrid, a network of 11 branches and more than 25 dealerships, strengthened in 2024 and 2025 with the new facilities I mentioned in Seville, as well as in Castile and León. Our flagship is our head office in Sabadell, a 16,500-square-metre complex that brings together offices, workshop facilities, a spare parts area, a demonstration zone and a streaming training room.

Two years after the inauguration of that headquarters, what impact has it had on your operations?

Our Sabadell headquarters has become established as a hub for innovation and sustainability. The integration of various services strengthens our after-sales and support capabilities. With solar panels, energy-efficiency systems and LED lighting, it provides a modern environment for more than 290 professionals and, designed to qualify for LEED Gold certification, it is now the epicentre of our transformation towards more connected logistics that are more environmentally friendly.

What have been your most important investments in Spain to date?

Using our Kaizen philosophy, we have invested in strategic automation and digitalisation projects that drive innovation in the logistics sector. Sabadell’s head office, designed in line with the principles of automation, connectivity and efficiency, has become established as our technology hub in Spain. The new branches in Seville, as well as those in Castile and León, and end-to-end automation projects with AGV/AMR and connected management systems, do in addition strengthen our leadership in digitalisation and operational efficiency. We are at the same time continuing to enhance the ongoing training of our more than 600 professionals in order to build an intelligent, competitive and sustainable logistics ecosystem, with a positive impact on customers, employees and society.

How important is Spain in Toyota Material Handling's strategy?

Spain is a key market for Toyota Material Handling, not only because of its dynamism and strategic position, but also because of its ability to project talent in Europe, with prominent figures such as Ernesto Domínguez, CEO of the group. Our local leadership is underpinned by innovative solutions, a robust infrastructure and the commitment of our professionals, which has enabled us to influence other markets. The recent opening of branches in Seville, as well as in Castile and León, reinforces this commitment and consolidates Spain as a strategic subsidiary for the innovation and development of the Group.

What is your customer profile in Spain?

In Spain, we work with customers of all sizes and across all sectors, from SMEs to large multinationals in industry, logistics, transport, distribution and the food industry, helping them to improve their material handling processes. Our customers value efficiency, sustainability and productivity, being able to find advanced solutions at Toyota for automation, connectivity and alternative energy sources such as lithium and green hydrogen, together with a robust after-sales service and the customisation of each project.

What are your next challenges?

Our greatest challenge is to continue driving automation forward and to make it the engine that transforms logistics, moving it towards smarter and more efficient operations. In 2025, we took a decisive step forward with projects that integrate AGVs/AMRs and connected systems, such as those developed together with Carreras and STEF, which demonstrate that technology can increase productivity and reduce environmental impact. Automation, digitalisation and the use of real-time data will be key to achieving the goal of zero emissions by 2040 and to building a logistics system that is more efficient, safer and more sustainable.
