Litera Meat to build new plant in Huesca

The investment will amount to 80 million euros and 150 jobs will be created, mainly for women

The Pini group has decided to strengthen its commitment to the Spanish meat industry. Following the startup of Litera Meat in 2019 with an investment of 130 million euros, the company has just announced the construction of a new plant from where it will launch a venture hitherto unseen in its trajectory: the manufacture of processed food products.

The subsidiary of the Italian group has already acquired some ten hectares of land between San Esteban de Litera and Binéfar in the province of Huesca, just off the A-133 motorway. This will be its fourth factory in the area and the second in the town of San Esteban, where it has a pig slaughterhouse. The company has another fully functioning slaughterhouse in neighbouring Binéfar, and it will be building a cured ham drying facility in Albelda in 2023.

Pizzas and hamburgers
Litera Meat has already started processing the required documents for the new industrial plant installation, which will be the company’s first venture into preparing end products, manufacturing fresh and frozen pizzas, pre-cooked products and hamburgers.

It plans to invest around 80 million euros, and the plant will have a surface area of around 44,000 square metres. Its goal is to achieve 150 employees when the facility is in full production, with a workforce that will be mainly made up of women.

Focal point of job creation
The Italian group's new venture will have a very positive effect on the Litera region, where it already employs 1,600 people. This will be increased by 150 from the processed food plant and the 80 planned to be employed at the cured meat drying facility in Albelda, whose construction in 2023 will represent the investment of a further 50 million euros.

This choice was not made lightly. Spain is one of the benchmarks in the international pork industry, with Aragón recording the highest growth figures in recent years, with 27% in 2021 alone. The concentration of pig farms in this region, and especially in the Litera area, makes it a strategic place for the agri-food industry. What's more, for the Pini group, proximity to farmers is essential in terms of its commitment to animal welfare by reducing transport time.

The company's profile is very much directed towards exports. Its products are exported to the European Union and over 50 other countries across the five continents, including the world’s major meat markets.
