Cepsa secures renewable energy for green hydrogen portfolio

The company has reached an agreement to secure the energy produced by fifteen projects being developed by the Ibereólica Renovables Group
Cepsa has signed an agreement with the Ibereólica Renovables Group which guarantees the supply of renewable energy for its green hydrogen projects and network of service stations. The electricity will come from the portfolio that the Spanish group is developing in Castile-Leon and Extremadura, which will amount to five gigawatts of installed capacity when completed.
The long-term agreement guarantees the viability of the Ibereólica Renovables Group's projects, which comprise nine wind farms, four solar power plants and two hybrid plants. All are currently at the advanced planning stage and are expected to be operational by 2026. The particular importance of wind power in this portfolio was one of the attractions for Cepsa, as the company was looking for an alternative energy source to complement the solar energy assets already held in the company's own portfolio.
Energy parks
Cepsa’s green hydrogen project will be developed in two large production centres to be installed in its energy parks in Campo de Gibraltar (San Roque, Cádiz) and La Rábida (Palos de la Frontera, Huelva). The company has seventeen solar power projects under development in the Castile-La Mancha, Andalusia, Extremadura and Madrid regions, with a capacity of 2.1 gigawatts. Ibereólica's projects will be located in the provinces of Burgos, Palencia, Valladolid, Zamora, Ávila and Cáceres.
Taking the company's own projects and adding them to the Ibereólica projects means that the energy company has guaranteed the supply of the renewable energy needed for its industrial sites, especially for the production of green hydrogen. The firm will also use it to power the ultra-fast charging points for electric vehicles that are currently being installed in its network of service stations.
Stable and competitive pricing
Carlos Barrasa, head of Cepsa’ss sales and renewable energy department, explained, “Through this partnership with Grupo Ibereólica Renovables, one of the main players in the renewable energy sector in Spain, we are strengthening long-term access to sustainable energy at a stable and competitive price, to promote the development of our green hydrogen and biofuel projects, and as a complement to our renewable energy projects”.
President and founder of the Ibereólica Renovables Group, Gregorio Álvarez, added, "Our Group's partnership with one of the main players in the energy sector, Cepsa, is a fundamental tool to develop our portfolio of renewable generation projects in Spain in the medium and long term, and reinforces our resolute commitment to decarbonising the energy mix as a means of promoting a more sustainable world".
