Fujitsu teams up with Cesga to create quantum centre in Galicia

With the collaboration of Oxford Quantum Circuits, they want to turn the region into an international hub for this technology
Fujitsu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Galician supercomputing centre (Cesga) to set up a quantum centre in Galicia. Its aim will be to accelerate joint research through the use of quantum computing technologies. It will also promote the development of the quantum industry at a regional and international level.
The new centre will start operating next September. Its promoters will work closely with Galician universities and researchers from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) to foster the development and research of quantum technologies, generate knowledge, attract talent and investment, and promote the results of their research as a tool to address societal challenges.
Potential and benefits
Since its creation in 1991, Cesga has used high-performance computers and communication technologies to contribute to developing science and technology. In view of the evolution of quantum technologies, it has now decided to incorporate these together with Fujitsu to help Galicia become an international hub in this field.
The Japanese multinational will provide its expertise in this technology to help Cesga build two cluster systems based on quantum computers developed by Fujitsu and Oxford Quantum Circuits. The two partners plan to develop three real use cases, working with the relevant Galician companies to demonstrate the potential and benefits of quantum technologies.
Global leadership position
Fujitsu Limited’s Executive Officer, CTO and CPO, Vivek Mahajan, is excited to collaborate with Cesga on the new quantum centre “to boost the development of technology research and industrial applications in Europe, and contribute to job creation and human resource development in the quantum industry”.
The Director of Cesga, Lois Orosa, does in turn consider this collaboration key “for Galicia to boost its already significant production of new developments and research, both in quantum hardware and software in the coming years, helping us to position our research groups as world leaders, and enabling them to shape the future of quantum computing”.
Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) CEO Ilana Wisby explains, “Our vision is to enable a more reliable and seamless approach to quantum computing. This marks another important milestone for OQC as we continue to bring our world-leading quantum capabilities to the world. Technology has the power to enable truly life-changing discoveries, and we are delighted to be working with Cesga and Fujitsu on their journey into the future of computing.”
