Iberdrola remains world’s eighth most valuable energy company

Siemens Gamesa enters Brand Finance's top 50 companies ranking, and Naturgy and Endesa both figure again

Four Spanish companies appear in the ranking of the 50 most valuable energy brands in the world in 2023, put together by consultancy firm Brand Finance. The energy company that ranked highest is Iberdrola, which maintains eighth place, while the newcomer this year is Siemens Gamesa, going straight in at 33rd place. Alongside them, Endesa and Naturgy occupy the 27th and 28th places, respectively.

Thanks to the growth of the three veterans and the addition of Siemens Gamesa to this ranking, Spanish brands overall have become the fastest growing in the world, with a 28% increase in value with respect to 2022. Altogether, they are in fact valued at 10.2 billion euros.

International performance
According to Brand Finance’s estimates, Iberdrola's value increased by 11% in 2022 to 4.1 billion euros. The report places value on the company’s international performance, with activity in countries like the United States and Brazil, which has increased its profit by 11.7% and offset the loss experienced in Spain.

The study also appraises the 10.73 billion euros invested by Iberdrola in renewable energies and smart grids last year, with the aim of boosting electrification and electric autonomy. That investment, which was 13% higher than in 2021, will grow again this year to 11 billion euros.

Renewable energy
Naturgy's growth in 2022 is estimated at 4%, with an increase in profits of 35.8% despite the price control established by the Government of Spain. It ranks 28th, one place above Endesa. Less fortunately, the third Spanish electricity company in the ranking fell ten places after registering a 5% reduction in its brand value. Despite its record results, the outlook for the coming years is not optimistic and its brand strength, which is another of the features studied in the report, is down by 3%.

Siemens Gamesa's entry in 33rd place highlights the weight of renewable energy sources in the ranking for an industry that still relies heavily on traditional fuels. The Spanish company is one of the world's leading manufacturers of wind turbines, the driving force behind an energy source that is set to grow rapidly with the development of floating offshore wind energy in the coming years.

Global supply chains
As Pilar Alonso Ulloa, Managing Director of Brand Finance in Iberia and South America, pointed out, “Brands in countries like Germany, which have stopped importing gas from Russia, have increased in value. Spanish brands, however, experienced a 2022 that was marked by the energy crisis and difficulties in global supply chains. Among the Spanish brands in the industry, Iberdrola is the one that has recorded the greatest increase in brand value.”

Light years ahead of the others, China's State Grid tops the Brand Finance ranking, valued at 58.7 billion euros. It is followed by Italy's Enel and France's EDF, tied with a value of 11.3 billion euros. Behind Iberdrola in eighth place are France's Engie, Germany's E.on, China's Chn Energy and France's Veolia. Rounding off the top ten are Germany's Enbw and South Korea's Icepco.
