Stellantis exceeds 6,500 employees at Vigo plant

The multinational has recalled a fourth shift of 700 workers who have received 95,000 hours of training

On 16 September, the fourth shift for system 2 returned to the Stellantis plant in Vigo (Pontevedra). Composed of 700 employees, the shift’s work will enable the plant to increase production volume at a time when gradual recovery is being seen in both sales and supply flows.

It was in fact supply problems resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic that forced the company to suspend this shift in October 2021. The equipment was first deployed in 2018, and as part of the plant's system 2 it is involved in producing various models of light commercial vehicles for the Citroën, Fiat, Opel, Peugeot and Vauxhall brands.

Production increase
System 2 at the Stellantis factory in Vigo produces over 1,200 vehicles per day from Monday to Friday, which is slightly more than half of the 2,300 cars that leave the plant each day. The newly hired fourth shift workers will produce around 670 units every weekend day.

The recall of the fourth shift takes the Galician Stellantis plant to over 6,500 employees. A total of 700 new workers have been recruited to cover the needs arising from its start-up. Staff from other shifts have joined the new team voluntarily, and any vacancies across any shifts have been filled by new recruits.

Training of workers
A total of 95,000 hours of training have been provided for the new shift. To achieve this, the French company has collaborated with the Galician Government, through the training aid plans from the Department of Employment Promotion and Equality.

The Director of Stellantis Vigo, Ignacio Bueno, said, “With the new equipment, we will be able to meet the high demand for our light commercial models. There are still some difficulties in supplying the plant, but we foresee that supply lines will stabilise, allowing us to make the most of our production potential.”

There are still some difficulties in the market, as Bueno explained, but the company stresses that production forecasts are beginning to stabilise in order to respond to the high demand for models produced at this plant.
