Flying Bark opens animation studio in Spain to strengthen international presence

This is a "natural step" because of the creative and technical talent and the current incentives.

Flying Bark Productions, with offices in Sydney (Australia) and Los Angeles (California), has announced the opening of its third animation studio in Madrid, with which it will continue to increase its international presence.

The Australian company is known for its work in traditional 2D animation and computer-generated images. As an independent producer, it  has completed work for several international studios and platforms such as Disney, Marvel, Netflix and Nickelodeon.

Successful co-productions
The company currently employs 600 creative, technical and production professionals worldwide. As the company's CEO Barbara Stephen explained, "We have always enjoyed collaborating with European storytellers and creative talent over the years, with many successful co-productions for our independent projects. We are now delighted to establish an even stronger presence in Europe with the opening of our studio in Madrid."

According to Stephen, "Spain was a natural next step for us because of the world-renowned creative and technical talent, the attractive local incentives and the charm of one of the best cities in Europe. Initially, the studio will focus on hiring CG (computer-generated images) talent, but we plan to grow a traditional 2D talent pool in the near future and engage in the development and production of a series of original content with international appeal."

To launch the studio, Flying Bark has teamed up with Ramón Giráldez, an experienced studio supervisor who the Australian company describes as a key figure in the Spanish animation industry.

Titles and awards
An Emmy Award winner for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, created for Disney TVA, the producer is behind other titles such as What If...? for Marvel, Monkie Kid for Lego and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Nickelodeon.

Flying Bark Productions is currently developing the animated adaptation of the Stranger Things series for Netflix. As an independent producer, it has made other films and series, such as Maya the Bee Movie and FriendZspace, and is now working on Tales from Outer Suburbia, based on the graphic novel by Australian Shaun Tan.

The Australian-Spanish co-production of 200% Wolf, the sequel to 100% Wolf, will be released in cinemas in the second half of 2024.
