Swissport starts air freight operations in Balearic Islands

It has already created 300 jobs at the sixth Spanish airport to join its network
Swissport International now serves its customers at Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI), the third largest airport in Spain. Three hundred employees make up the new team created by the Swiss company, including passenger service agents and professionals specialised in ramp handling.
The new operator handled around 220 flights over Easter, its first test run in one of Europe's top tourist destinations. Its customer base in this first stage includes airlines such as Condor, Sunclass, Albastar, Marabu, Aegean and People's Airlines..
Electrified fleet
Electric vehicles account for 64.9% of the fleet that Swissport has deployed at the Mallorcan airport, a percentage that will grow to 90% by 2028. The Swiss company is demonstrating its global commitment to achieving net zero emissions worldwide by 2050. To achieve this, it will not only need to decarbonise its operations but also its supply chain.
The arrival in Palma de Mallorca of the company specialising in cargo logistics makes this airport the sixth in its Spanish network, along with those in Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Valencia and Zaragoza. This airport, the only one in Europe to exceed pre-pandemic traffic levels in 2022, counts Germany, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia among its main outbound markets on the continent.
Future growth of the airport
Swissport Spain's Managing Director Jorge García describes the island as “an important Spanish tourist destination and one of the biggest leisure centres in Europe”, and said, “At Swissport, we are excited to be part of the airport's future growth story, and our dedicated team of professionals in Mallorca are proud to contribute to a seamless travel experience for local residents and visitors from all over Europe and beyond”.
Swissport's CEO for the CEMEA region, Dirk Goovaerts, explained: “We welcome our new venture in Palma de Mallorca with a full commitment to provide exceptional service and to be a reliable partner for airlines, airports and other stakeholders,” adding, “By leveraging our experience as a leader in this industry, we want to contribute to improving the airport's performance and consolidating its position as a key tourist gateway in Europe”.
