Amazon promotes 17 new renewable projects in Spain

The company’s aim is to offset the energy consumed by its Spanish operations and data centres.
Amazon has announced that it will promote 17 new renewable energy projects in Spain, including solar and wind power facilities. With these initiatives, the US company wants to match the electricity it uses in Spain, including its operations and data centres, with renewable energy generation. It thereby aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040, in line with its Climate Pledge and 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement.
So far, Amazon has promoted 94 solar and wind projects in Spain, which have the capacity to generate over 3.7 GWh of energy per year. These include 63 large-scale solar and wind farms. The company has also installed solar roofs on its logistics centres and other facilities.
870-MWpcapacity
The new projects to be promoted in Spain, both onsite and offsite, are divided into wind farms and solar plants to be installed in Aragon, Andalusia, Castile and Leon, Catalonia and Extremadura. These new projects will add another 870 MWp of capacity.
Among the new projects, the solar plant in Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca) will be one of the largest renewable energy parks promoted by Amazon in Spain. It will have an installed capacity of 212 MWp and will start operating later this year. According to data provided by Amazon, Iberdrola will invest close to 200 million euros in this project and will generate up to 800 jobs at peak construction times.
More sustainable operations
Amazon's Director of Energy for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Lindsay McQuade, highlighted the company's firm commitment “to providing the necessary infrastructure and services to our customers, while continuing to work to power our operations in a more sustainable way”.
McQuade added, “We are aware that electrifying our society and digitising it requires investment in energy sources and the networks on which we depend if we are to realise the full potential of new technologies. That's why Amazon has spearheaded over 230 solar and wind projects in Europe, making us the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in Europe and the world in 2024.”
The US company claims that in 2023 it reached its goal to match the electricity it uses globally with 100% renewable energy, when its target was to reach this milestone by 2030. So far, it has driven forward renewable energy projects around the world with the capacity to power 24.3 million European homes. Through these, the company not only offsets the electricity used for its operations, but also contributes to generating employment.
