Subsidiaries of foreign companies in Spain

Subsidiaries of foreign companies are considered to be those that are resident in Spain and controlled by a non-resident institutional unit or company.

In the latest INE statistics, 14,761 subsidiaries of foreign companies were counted in the Industrial, Commercial and Non-financial market services sectors.

These subsidiaries generated a turnover of 592 billion euros and employed 2,014,409 people. 47.8% of the subsidiaries belonged to the Services industry, 31.6% to the Commercial sector and 20.7% to the Industrial sector.

In terms of employment, subsidiaries in the Services industry employed 51.8% of the total, those in the Industrial sector 26.2% and those in the Commercial sector 22.0%. In terms of activities, the ones with the highest number of subsidiaries were Professional, scientific and technical activities (12.6% of the total) and Wholesale trade of ICT equipment and other machinery and equipment and Non-specialised wholesale trade (12.5%).

The countries with the highest number of subsidiaries were Germany (14.2% of the total), France (11.1%) and the United States (10.3%).
