Dia to build six new logistics warehouses in Spain by 2029
It will invest more than €70 million to support the expected increase in stores.
Dia has announced that it will invest more than €70 million in a strategic plan to expand and modernize its logistics network in Spain by 2029. The company will build six new warehouses that will expand its logistics space by more than 145,000 square meters, to close to half a million square meters, 40% more than at present. The aim is to increase its logistics capacity and support the expected increase in the number of stores.
As part of the plan announced, Dia has already opened its first distribution centre in Seville. It has in addition begun work on another warehouse in León, which will open in the first half of 2026, and has just announced the construction of a new centre in Málaga. The food distributor's investment, which will address the expansion, modernization, and equipping of its logistics network, will be complemented by its real estate partners’ investment, which will be responsible for the promotion and development of the buildings.
Streamlining processes and increasing productivity
The new warehouses will replicate the new logistics model launched at the Toledo distribution centre in 2022. In addition to developing a more efficient and sustainable supply chain, they will incorporate technological improvements to streamline processes and increase productivity. Their launch will reduce the average transport distance to stores and provide the logistics space needed to serve the 300 new local stores that the company plans to open by 2029.
Dia's investment in this strategic plan also includes a budget for the modernization of the rest of its logistics facilities, including a project that will renovate cold rooms in order to operate without greenhouse gases. Energy efficiency systems will also be optimized, with solar panels and lithium-ion batteries for handling equipment, and electric truck chargers will be pre-installed, with an area also being reserved for waste management.
Operational capacity
Inés Vílchez, Director of Logistics, Operations, and Supply Chain at Dia Spain, explained, "By expanding our logistics space, we are strengthening our operational capacity to drive our business forward and support the needs of our expansion plan. Added to this is an innovative distribution centre model, one which encompasses the highest standards of sustainability and cutting-edge technologies to guarantee greater efficiency in the supply chain, while also advancing our environmental commitments."
The new logistics centre in Seville has replaced the one in operation until now. With an area of 53,000 square meters, it has around 230 employees and serves a total of 235 stores in Seville, Cadiz, and Huelva. The León centre, with 64,000 square meters, will serve 200 stores in Castile and León and Asturias and will have 150 employees. The Málaga centre, which is slightly larger, will be the second largest in the chain and will begin operating in the first half of 2027. The other three new facilities are still to be determined.
