Mondelēz Navarra plant unveils world-first sustainable oven

In the last four years the company has invested around 42 million euros in upgrading these facilities.

Mondelēz España’s factory in Viana, Navarra, Spain, has commissioned the world’s first all-electric oven for baking Oreo biscuits. This new equipment reduces energy consumption, completely eliminates exhaust fumes and makes the plant the first to achieve an emission-free baking process for this brand of biscuits.

In addition to reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability, this innovative milestone will increase the plant’s production capacity by up to 3,400 kilos per hour. Its design gives it great flexibility to adapt to a wide variety of product requirements. In addition, its fast start-up and cooling capabilities, coupled with high baking consistency, give it the potential to revolutionise Oreo biscuit production on a global scale.

Powered exclusively by renewable energy
The Director of the Viana plant, César Celemín, explained, “This unprecedented breakthrough marks a milestone in the history of the plant and the company. The implementation of Oreo’s world-first electric oven, powered exclusively by renewable energy, optimises thermal efficiency and completely eliminates direct combustion emissions. This achievement reinforces our commitment to sustainability, innovation and operational excellence, consolidating our position in responsible and cutting-edge solutions for the future.”

In the last four years, the Navarre plant has received around 42 million euros in investments, including the installation of the new electric oven. Most of these investments have gone into digitising and automating the facilities, as well as other industrial and infrastructure improvements.

Six decades of production
Various brands of biscuits, such as Fontaneda Digestive and Chips Ahoy have been being produced for more than six decades at this factory, where Mondelēz has maintained a constant commitment to modernisation and innovation, ,. It was here that the first Oreos produced in Europe were baked.
