Netflix to invest over 1 billion euros in Spain by 2028

Since 2017, the company has filmed over 1,000 productions in Spain and created more than 20,000 jobs.

Netflix has announced that it will invest over 1 billion euros in Spain over the next four years. It was one of the CEOs at the American company, Ted Sarandos, who announced the project, taking advantage of his visit to Spain on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the streaming platform’s arrival in Spain.

The new investment reinforces the company’s commitment to the Spanish audiovisual industry. The announcement was made at Netflix’s production facility in Tres Cantos, Madrid, which started operations in 2019 and marked the beginning of that commitment with the largest filming area in the European Union: spanning 22,000 square metres, ten film sets and a post-production centre.

A great place to do business
Netflix’s investment in Spain will be distributed between 2025 and 2028, and will follow the path of the last decade. Since 2017, the company has premiered over 1,000 Spanish productions around the world, filming in more than 200 locations across all of Spain’s autonomous communities and contributing to the creation of over 20,000 jobs in the Spanish audiovisual industry.

As Sarandos himself explained to the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and the Minister for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, Óscar López, “Spain not only stands out for its cultural heritage, its powerful audiovisual industry and its exceptional creative talent: it is also a great place to do business. You have always supported regulation that encourages creativity, innovation and long-term vision. Inspired by all of this, we built our centre in Tres Cantos, which is much more than our home: it is a reflection of our deep and lasting commitment to Spain.” He also added, “I have visited many of the best studios in the world, and this facility is second to none.”

The next generation of creative talent
In 2024, Netflix’s Spanish productions generated over 5 billion hours of viewing time on its platforms worldwide. Among the most outstanding productions are films like Society of the Snow, by Juan Antonio Bayona, which won 12 Goya awards, and series like Elite, by Carlos Montero, which is already the company’s longest-running production, not only in Spain but worldwide.

As Sarandos pointed out, “These productions and many more have fascinated audiences in Spain and around the world. And the reason these series and films resonate is obvious: each of them, in its own way, is profoundly Spanish: they were made in Spain, by Spanish creators, cast and crew. And all of this was done for a Spanish audience.”

After what the Netflix CEO describes as a fantastic 10 years,  and thanks to the 1 billion euros of investment announced, he assured that in the next decade, “we will be able to contribute even more to the Spanish economy, generate more jobs, tell more made-in-Spain stories and help train the next generation of creative talent”. Finally, he concluded: “These 10 years have been truly extraordinary and the next 10 years will be even more exciting”.
