Two US groups strengthen presence in Spanish fitness industry

Planet Fitness opens its fifth gym in less than a year and Barry's opens its second.

Two US franchises have set up in Spain, attracted by the success of gyms in the Spanish market. At the end of December, Planet Fitness opened its fifth gym since it arrived in Spain last summer, and which kicked off its launch in Europe. Barry's has opened its second boutique gym, focusing on high-intensity personal training.

The fifth Planet Fitness gym in Spain, located in Madrid's Delicias district, is the company's first urban gym in the country. With two floors and covering nearly 2,000 square metres, it follows the chain's motto, “We don't judge”, with which it wants to put an end to the intimidation that many users suffer due to their level of physical fitness.

Purchase from Paidesport
The brand's first gym opened in Sabadell (Barcelona) last summer, with three more being launched later in the Madrid region: in Fuenlabrada, Leganés and Torrejón de Ardoz. The latter two, both located in shopping centres, were incorporated after their purchase from Paidesport and are currently in the process of being transformed.

Planet Fitness Spain’s Managing Director Vicente Bañobre said, “Arriving in the centre of a big city like Madrid is a great step forward to continue taking our fitness offering to more and more places in Spain for everyone to access. We will seek to continue to expand our network, both with clubs located in large, commercial and accessible areas, and with more urban spaces like this one, in order to try to meet the needs of all types of users.”

High-intensity training
With a model it calls a ‘boutique’ gym, Barry's has also chosen Madrid for its second establishment in Spain after the one it opened in Barcelona in 2024. This centre’s speciality, which boasts of its popularity among international celebrities, is high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions, combining cardio and strength training, and it even has a space, the Red Room, which has been specially designed to maximise training results.

The company, which promotes a healthy and motivating lifestyle, has kitted out the fitness area with state-of-the-art equipment. In the ‘Fuel Bar’, it sells healthy, nutritious shakes to boost energy, improve performance and speed up recovery. The gym also includes a gym clothing shop.
