Stellantis confirms compact model production at Vigo and Zaragoza plants in Spain

The company highlights the competitiveness, know-how and social climate of these plants and the support from public authorities.

Motor vehicle manufacturer Stellantis has confirmed the award of the STLA Small platform to the Spanish plants in Vigo and Zaragoza. The next generation of compact cars assigned to each of these plants will be built using this platform. The company has justified its decision by highlighting the competitiveness, know-how and social climate of both factories, in addition to the support received from the public authorities.

STLA Small is a BEV- native multi-energy platform, i.e. it allows the various powertrains for each model to be produced interchangeably. In battery electric vehicles (BEVs), it offers a range of up to 500 kilometres. It is the fourth and final platform Stellantis has created as part of its electrification strategy, following the launch of STLA Medium in 2023 and the announcement of STLA Large and STLA Frame in 2024.

Life cycle of vehicles
All four platforms are designed to extend the life cycle of vehicles thanks to the interchangeability of battery cell chemistry, EDMs (Electric Drive Modules), power inverters and control software. Vigo and Zaragoza will share the STLA Small platform with the Pomigliano plant in Italy.

The three Stellantis plants (Vigo, Zaragoza and Madrid) produced 41.3% of the vehicles manufactured in Spain in 2024, according to Anfac data. As the only manufacturer that produces 100% electric passenger cars at all its Spanish plants, its production of 100% electric passenger cars and commercial vehicles accounted for 93.5% of the total made in Spain.

981,120 vehicles did in fact leave the three plants in 2024, having been manufactured for five brands: Citroën, Fiat, Lancia, Opel and Peugeot. 11% of these were electric vehicles, and 32% were light commercial vehicles.

Guaranteed future at the Madrid plant
The company has also made public its decision to guarantee the future of the Villaverde plant in Madrid. It is currently working on several scenarios and will report on these at a later stage.

The Madrid plant, which handles production of the Citroën C4 and C4 X models, manufactured 92,589 of these passenger cars last year, 11,119 of which were 100% electric. This facility was expanded last year to add a battery assembly line for motor vehicles produced at the plant.
