Waga Energy to build Andalusia biogas recovery plant

The plant will be operational in 2027 and will produce up to 80 gigawatt-hours of biomethane per year.

Energy company Waga Energy has reached an agreement with Spain’s Bioreciclaje de Cádiz and Enagás Renovable to set up a biomethane production project at the Miramundo-Los Hardales environmental complex in the town of Medina Sidonia, Cádiz. This is the French company’s second project in Spain, and it is expected to be operational in 2027.

Under the agreement, Waga Energy will finance, build and operate the purification facility using its Wagabox technology. This infrastructure will allow it to produce up to 80 gigawatt-hours of biomethane per year, an amount that can supply around 16,000 Spanish homes, and will prevent the emission of around 21,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

Local, renewable and circular energy
Waga Energy Spain CEO Baptiste Usquin explained, “Our Wagabox unit will make it possible to convert the biogas naturally emitted by the waste in the controlled deposit into a local, renewable and circular energy source. By producing biomethane – a pillar of the energy transition – we are taking concrete action against climate change and helping to strengthen Andalusia’s energy independence.”

With this project, Waga Energy is involved in producing renewable natural gas by converting landfill gas into a local and renewable energy source. José Antonio García Galdón, General Manager of Waste Treatment at Valoriza, which is part of the Bioreciclaje de Cádiz consortium, said, “Through this new agreement with Waga Energy and Enagás Renovable, we are continuing to show our commitment to sustainability, supporting a circular economy that promotes the conversion of waste into resources”.

Cutting-edge technology
Francisco de los Santos, Water Management Manager at GS Inima, another partner of Bioreciclaje de Cádiz, added, “We are proud to be part of a project that redefines waste management. By using cutting-edge technology, we are not only addressing the region’s environmental challenges, we are also creating a more sustainable future. We believe that this public-private partnership is the key to transforming waste into a valuable resource, boosting clean energy production and generating tangible benefits for the environment and our community.”

According to the CEO of Enagás Renovable, Antón Martínez, “by constructing this new biomethane production plant in collaboration with Bioreciclaje de Cádiz and Waga Energy, we are reaffirming our commitment to a sustainable future, promoting innovation and efficient waste management”.
