Cadiz, home to Capgemini's new Intelligent Industry Lab

The lab will help industrial companies around the world to innovate through new technologies

Consulting firm Capgemini has opened the Intelligent Industry Lab in the Cadiz Free Trade Zone, a centre which will see industrial application of innovative solutions developed from technologies like the cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), edge computing and 5G. The aim is to advance the digital transformation of industrial environments.

The French company has collaborated on this project with the Advanced Center for Aerospace Technologies (CATEC), the largest private aerospace technology centre in Spain, and which has one of its headquarters in Andalusia. Together, Capgemini and CATEC have developed an advanced manufacturing pilot project at this centre, called the factory of the future.

Relationship between machines and workers
The factory of the future created in Cadiz incorporates new technologies to digitalise processes. At the same time, it simplifies the relationship between  machines and the workers they share spaces with. The technologies that have been implemented include collaborative robotics, immersive realities, artificial intelligence and an internet of things with a wide range of sensor systems which makes it possible to measure the effective use, safety and comfort of each workstation and workspace.

From the new centre in Cádiz, the consultancy firm will collaborate with industrial companies around the world to design solutions that help them innovate their operations and allow them to take advantage of the full potential that digital technologies can offer as they evolve. By using this lab facility, their customers will be able to develop and test these solutions in a suitable environment that will not affect their day-to-day operations. They will also be able to explore the benefits of intelligent industry, maximising connectivity and scalability.

Local talent
Capgemini's CEO in Spain, Luis Abad, explained, “By opening this new lab, Capgemini aims to reinforce our commitment to developing intelligent industry based on the synergies between the physical and digital worlds. We want to support our customers, both national and international ones, on this transformation journey and help create innovative solutions and agile services that have a direct impact on business value. It is also a great opportunity for local talent who want to be part of a diverse, multicultural and international group.”

Joaquín Rodríguez, CEO of CATEC, said, “CATEC is proud to be part of the Intelligent Industry Lab, which involves launching a disruptive and innovative project in the field of intelligent industry and digitisation, and with which we have shown our capabilities in artificial intelligence, deep learning, machine learning, neural networks, virtual and augmented reality, digital twins, the industrial metaverse and robotics, all applied to developing the industrial processes of the future.”
