Mexican group Sigma to build Valencia Campofrío plant

The group will invest 134 million euros in this project and another 23 million euros in a bacon production line in Burgos.

Campofrío owner Sigma Alimentos has announced the implementation of a plan to recover its production capacity in the Valencian Community, which was seriously affected by the flooding of the Torrente (Valencia) plant during the heavy rains at the end of October last year.

Given the impossibility of repairing the facilities at that plant, the Mexican company, which specialises in producing and marketing foodstuffs for brands like Campofrío, will invest 134 million euros in constructing a new factory in Utiel (Valencia). The new facility will be used to produce processed meat products.

Strengthening competitiveness
As part of the project to accelerate the full recovery of its production capacity and strengthen its competitiveness, Sigma will also invest a further 23 million euros in expanding its facilities in La Bureba (Burgos) by commissioning a new line for producing bacon.

The company emphasises its confidence in the essential support from the authorities to advance both projects. Operational capacity is expected to be fully restored during 2027. This production recovery plan will also help to improve efficiency and operational flexibility, and will reinforce other efforts to increase profitability in Europe.

Job vacancies
Sigma’s announcement also guarantees employment for the over 300 employees who were affected by the flash floods, and is contributing to the industrial and social recovery of the area. The future plant will be designed with the ambition of making it one of the group’s most advanced, and will prioritise flexibility, efficiency and the group’s capacity to respond to future opportunities in Spain and Europe.

After first acquiring a stake in 2014, Sigma Alimentos has controlled 100% of the shares in Campofrío Food Group since June 2015.
