Disney+ seals first partnership with Spanish group to add platform content

It has signed an agreement with Atresmedia to distribute 300 hours of audiovisual production per year.
Disney+, The Walt Disney Company’s streaming service, has signed an agreement with Spanish television group Atresmedia to integrate Atresplayer’s content into its platform. This contract will enable the distribution of 300 hours of content per year, which will be regularly renewed to bring the company’s Spanish productions to audiences all over the world.
Through this agreement, the US platform will expand its catalogue and the Spanish platform will consolidate its model as a content platform, while both manage to increase their audiences. This is the first major partnership in the industry between a television group in Spain and one of the world’s leading streaming platforms.
Content produced in Spain
The first selection of Atresmedia content was incorporated into Disney+ in September, in a separate space dedicated to Atresplayer. Disney+ has also acquired the co-exclusive rights to a wide range of Atresmedia productions. It is in this way reinforcing its commitment to content produced in Spain. The platform itself has produced original series in the country.
Disney+ EMEA General Manager Karl Holmes commented on the deal, “Atresmedia offers excellent local content, including some of the best productions in the country. Adding hundreds of hours of this content for streaming on Disney+ is great news for our customers in Spain. This agreement reflects our commitment to support broadcasters across Europe.”
Quality and cultural relevance
According to Holmes, the goal of Disney+ is “to offer a wide variety of high-quality, culturally relevant stories to our customers, complementing our own catalogue, which continues to grow with Disney+ original series produced in Spain, such as the recent hit Ladrones: la tiara de Santa Águeda (called Suspicious Minds in English), as well as world-renowned films and series like Lilo & Stitch and FX’s The Bear.
Atresmedia CEO Javier Bardají spoke of a “pioneering and unprecedented” agreement that “has been part of our model and philosophy for decades” and “consolidates the leadership of Atresmedia and Atresplayer, reaffirming the success of its innovative content exploitation strategy. It allows us to broaden the scope of our productions, promoting Spanish talent and culture. Disney and Atresmedia have the quality and ambition of our content in common, as well as the care we both take with our brands. It was logical for us to join forces.”
