The president of Puertos del Estado (the Spanish Ports Agency), Gustavo Santana, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Colombian Ministry of Transport, adding to four already signed with other Latin American countries.

Puertos del Estado has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Colombian Ministry of Transport to increase port cooperation between the two countries, as part of a commitment to consolidate strategic ties with Latin America that reinforce the exchange of knowledge and best practices in the port sector.

At the signing ceremony, the President of Puertos del Estado, Gustavo Santana, together with the Colombian Minister of Transport, María Fernanda Rojas Mantilla, highlighted that “this memorandum will enable the implementation of projects of common interest to both countries, while strengthening the international strategy of the state-owned port system”.

The document provides for the promotion of collaborative activities, such as the exchange of information and experts, the organisation of meetings and conferences, and training and research in important areas such as port governance, digitalisation, energy transition, security, connectivity and port-city integration.

This Memorandum with Colombia means there are now five signed between Puertos del Estado and organisations in Latin American countries. Specifically, with the Panama Maritime Authority; the National Ports and Navigation Agency of Argentina; the National Port Authority of Peru and the National Port Commission of Guatemala, as well as a General Protocol of Action with the American Association of Port Authorities (APPA Latam).

These actions are part of one of the strategic areas in the Strategic Framework of the state-owned port system, Ports with International Projection, to promote technical and institutional cooperation in port affairs at a global level and boost the competitiveness of ports.

The president of Puertos del Estado also participated in Colombia in the “Blue Forum on a Sustainable Caribbean Sea”, where he presented the initiatives launched by the Spanish port system to address global challenges in port and maritime trade.
