Semco Maritime and Navantia Seanergies join forces in offshore wind energy

The two companies’ shared experience totals over 20 years and more than 30 offshore substations.
Danish company Semco Maritime and Navantia Seanergies, the renewable energy division of the public shipbuilder Navantia, have reached an agreement to jointly promote offshore wind energy. Under the premise that the world has an urgent need for reliable, sustainable and clean energy, the new partners have decided to pool their capabilities to design and build solutions to which they will bring the lessons learned from over 20 years’ experience, and more than 30 offshore substations delivered worldwide.
Navantia Seanergies, which specialises in constructing components for offshore wind farms and in developing hydrogen as an energy vector for transport, will provide its capacity as an industrial-scale manufacturer in the sector to the new company. Semco Maritime, which has been involved in over 20 offshore wind farm projects worldwide since 2002, will in turn will bring its expertise as a supplier of offshore HVAC substations.
EPC Solutions
The partners will offer EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) solutions in which they envisage using a range of standardised building blocks to make constructing projects easier and more efficient. They will also leverage their maintenance portfolio of over 40 marine substations across Europe.
Senior Vice President of Semco Maritime's renewables division, Thomas Thomsen, said the partnership is “an important milestone”, also explaining that, “By combining our extensive experience in offshore HVAC substations with the industrial capabilities of Navantia Seanergies, we are ready to offer innovative, sustainable solutions to meet the growing demand for clean energy”.
Europe and North America
The market focus of the partnership between the two companies will be Europe and North America. In addition, they will be joined by the Vietnamese company PTSC M&C for their work in the Asia-Pacific market.
The Vice President of Navantia Seanergies, Javier Herrador, said that his company fully shares the vision and strategic purpose of Semco Maritime, adding that, “In terms of promoting the energy transition, the decarbonisation of society and Europe's energy independence, thanks to this partnership we will grow together in the offshore wind market, gaining weight in the offshore substation segment, taking advantage of the synergies that both companies have in this market and the complementarity of our capabilities, knowledge and corporate cultures”.
Manufacture of large structures
Navantia Seanergies celebrated its 10th anniversary in offshore wind energy in 2024. During that period, it has developed 21 projects in nine countries. 70% of the world's floating platforms have come from its facilities. Eight top-line, HVAC and HVDC projects have been developed at its shipyards in Puerto Real (Cádiz).
The Puerto Real facilities are prepared to manufacture large structures. They have major lifting equipment and a new flat panel workshop that will enable panels measuring up to 20x22 metres and weighing up to 150 tonnes to be manufactured. They also incorporate state-of-the-art automation and welding technology.
