ArcelorMittal and Moeve in sustainable Spanish steel innovation
Their innovation labs will drive disruptive technologies to advance industrial decarbonisation.
Moeve and ArcelorMittal have joined forces to create a new body that will develop projects with a direct impact on the competitiveness and sustainability of the productive sector. The platform, named Green Molecules to Green Steel (G2G), aims to develop, scale up and deploy disruptive technologies that accelerate industrial decarbonisation and the transition towards economically viable low-emission steel.
This innovation platform brings together its two partners’ expertise in innovation, energy solutions and industrial capabilities. They will contribute their own funds and attract participation from public- and private-sector organisations aligned with their objectives. This public-private collaboration will seek to develop industrial demonstrators that will subsequently be scaled up at their production sites.
G2G aims to be an open, collaborative ecosystem that helps strengthen the innovation landscape, creating opportunities for startups, universities and technology centres, and attracting talent.
Sustainable molecule energy base
Energy based on sustainable molecules, such as biogas, biomethane, renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, as well as second-generation biofuels, will be the starting point for the projects. Other solutions to advance decarbonisation, such as more efficient catalysts, will also be explored.
Moeve and ArcelorMittal innovation centres will support the projects with disruptive, cutting-edge technologies for carbon capture. They will also drive improvements in production processes through biotechnology and apply artificial intelligence to the creation of new materials.
Excellent example
ArcelorMittal Chief Technology Officer and Vice-President Pinakin Chaubal said, “We need to continue exploring technologies that enable us to achieve environmentally and economically sustainable production, and we must do so as soon as possible. ArcelorMittal has major R&D centres around the world, particularly in Spain, but given the complexity of the challenge, we will never solve it on our own. Now more than ever, we need to work on collaborative innovation models, of which this platform is an excellent example.”
Moeve CEO Maarten Wetselaar added, “What we are launching today is a tool that will enable us to deliver solutions while also making progress towards the continent’s energy autonomy. This is the path we have chosen at Moeve, with investments and new projects through which we aim to lead the energy transition.”
Spain is home to ArcelorMittal’s two most important low-emission steel projects in Europe, and in which it has made significant investments: the Sestao (Vizcaya) project for recycled, renewably produced steel for flat products, and the Gijón (Asturias) project for long products.
