BW ESS to build two large-scale battery projects in Valencia
Work will begin in 2027, with the aim of bringing the projects into operation in 2028.
Swiss company BW ESS, an owner and operator of energy storage systems, has purchased from Spanish developer Navacant, which specialises in large-scale renewable energy projects, the development rights, contracts and administrative permits for the construction of two stand-alone, large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Valencia, with a total capacity of 126 megawatts and up to 675 megawatt-hours.
This transaction expands BW ESS’s presence in the Spanish energy storage market, where it has operated since 2025. The two projects, with capacities of 99 and twenty-seven megawatts respectively, have been in development for more than eighteen months and are expected to reach ready-to-build status in 2027. If this forecast proves to be accurate, they could begin commercial operations in 2028, as scheduled.
Integration of energy sources
In addition to Spain, the Swiss company operates in the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Germany and Sweden. Its interest in the Spanish market stems from its need for assets capable of responding rapidly to fluctuations in supply and demand, facilitating the integration of variable energy sources and strengthening operational resilience.
In this context, energy storage is becoming established as a critical infrastructure asset class in our country, and the scale and grid connection capacity of the two projects in Valencia align perfectly with BW ESS’s approach.
Technical expertise
The company intends to retain ownership of the assets and operate them over the long term. Under the agreement with Navacant, CST Energy, one of the Spanish company’s partners, will continue to lead the projects until they reach ready-to-build status, contributing its technical expertise and knowledge of the local market. The subsequent construction and operational phases will then be led by BW ESS.
César Izco, a partner at Navacant, champions his company’s development approach, which “ensures that project delivery meets the high standards required by BW ESS”. Meanwhile, Isaac García Moreno, Executive Officer of the Swiss company, describes the growth of its energy storage platform in Spain “through a combination of in-house development and the acquisition of high-quality projects at advanced stages”.
