GLS launches an automated logistics centre in Zaragoza
It has invested EUR 21 million and will have the capacity to process up to 16,000 parcels per hour.
Dutch company GLS, which specialises in parcel services, freight transport and express deliveries, has strengthened its operational network in north-eastern Spain by opening a logistics centre in Zaragoza. This initiative has involved an investment of EUR 21 million and will create up to 100 jobs once fully operational.
The new facility is located at Plaza (Zaragoza Logistics Platform), the city’s leading logistics hub and one of the most important in southern Europe. By bringing the new facility into operation, the company is responding to growing demand linked to e-commerce.
A strategic hub for nationwide connectivity
The building comprises a 7,400-square-metre warehouse and two floors of offices covering a total of 950 square metres. Situated on a 21,500-square-metre plot, it has direct connections to the A‑2 (Madrid–Barcelona), the A‑23 (Valencia) and the AP‑68 (Bilbao), making the city a strategic hub for nationwide connectivity.
The building has been equipped with state-of-the-art automation systems. Specifically, three automated sorting systems give the facility the capacity to process 16,000 parcels per hour. This milestone will enable the company to boost productivity, improve transit times and strengthen the network’s resilience during high-demand campaigns.
Better coordination
Another feature that will help streamline operations is the building’s design itself, which aims to optimise operational flow through swift loading and unloading and better coordination between the different modes of transport. This increases sorting capacity and speeds up the delivery of shipments.
GLS Spain’s Managing Director, Roberto Martínez, describes the opening of the new centre as “a key step in our growth plan and commitment to service quality”. As such, it enables the company to “increase capacity and efficiency in a strategic location such as Zaragoza, a key hub in our national infrastructure network”. He adds that the new centre “will provide significant support to our network of partner agencies and local entrepreneurs, who are a key part of GLS’s model in Spain. With this new facility, we aim to strengthen the position of Zaragoza and Aragón as a strategic hub in our network, ensuring that both large businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can benefit from faster, more efficient logistics and transport.”
