Present in Spain since 2011, last year HCLTech selected Spain and Portugal for the development of its strategic program New Frontiers

Founded in 1976, HCLTech is a next-gen global technology company that helps enterprises in Supercharging ProgressTM by reimagining their businesses for the digital age. Through its worldwide network of cutting-edge facilities and co-innovation labs, global delivery capabilities, and over 211,000+ ‘Ideapreneurs’ across 52 countries, HCLTech brings together the best of technology and people to deliver holistic services to leading enterprises across all major verticals including Financial Services, Manufacturing, Technology and Services, Telecom and Media, Retail and CPG, Life Sciences and Healthcare and Public Services, including 250 of the Fortune 500 and 650 of the Global 2000.

HCLTech has a broad focus across the key themes of Digital, Engineering and Cloud. The organization offers its services and products through three business units: IT and Business Services (ITBS), Engineering and R&D Services (ERS), and Products & Platforms (P&P).

With a history that has already exceeded ten years in Iberia, the company employs more than 750 people between Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon. Now, after the appointment of Adolfo Calviño Asensio as Country Head in both countries, it plans to boost its operations and reach 2,000 employees in 2024, with the aim of becoming a leading technology provider and a strategic technology partner for its clients.

What were HCLTech’s objectives when it arrived in Spain in 2011?

HCLTech initially entered Spain about a decade ago with the preliminary intent to continue catering to the increasing demands of global clients that expanded operations in the region and needed technology services to be provided locally. In the quest to digitally transform these businesses, HCLTech has been empowering clients in Spain since 2011 with a 99% localized workforce. In Madrid, it partnered with a leading multinational digital bank, headquartered in Europe, to create a dedicated delivery center and a co-innovation lab. Its successful strategic business transformation engagements with the leading global clients across verticals have inspired 25+ product and platform customers locally.

How has the company evolved in Spain since then?

Although HCLTech has been present in Spain since 2011, it was only in the early part of last year that HCLTech selected Spain & Portugal as the first set of countries in Southern Europe under its strategic New Frontiers program for investment in the near term to take advantage of their growth in the medium term. These countries were chosen on a variety of criteria including IT services market size and growth, propensity to partner and transform digitally and long-term socio-economic stability. The growth strategy in these countries would be driven by local geographic leadership coordinating the ongoing effort of the vertical sales, technology practice and service-led delivery organizations. This would be well supported through various other initiatives including local delivery centers, talent localization and local market partnerships with consultants and other service providers. HCLTech has already appointed me as country head of Spain & Portugal to accelerate business growth in the region across all key industry verticals, jointly with a strong local management team to run the business in Spain & Portugal. This appointment is the first of several strategic investments HCLTech is making in Iberia, as the company expands its geographic footprint.

What infrastructure do you have in our country?

HCLTech has already setup offices in Spain & Portugal with more than 750+ employees supporting multiple global and local clients across their digital & applications, cloud journeys, business process operations, and workplace transformation initiatives. We envisage to launch a Fintech Innovation Lab in Madrid in collaboration with one of our largest banking clients in Europe. Additionally, dedicated nearshore delivery centers in tier-2 cities within Spain & Portugal are being setup in order to suitably address the increasing traction from local as well as global clients.

How important is Spain in the company's strategy?

HCLTech identified multiple geographies and segregated them into core, focus, and new frontier markets. We identified Spain & Portugal among other fast-growing countries (new frontiers) where the company has presence but limited ability to address global clients’ local demands. Many locations in these countries can also be utilized as nearshore or offshore delivery centers for HCLTech’s other geographic markets. New frontier countries have been chosen on various criteria, including IT services market size and growth, propensity to partner and transform digitally, and long-term socio-economic stability. The growth strategy in all these countries will be driven by local geographic leadership coordinating the ongoing effort of the vertical sales, technology practice, and service-led delivery organizations. This strategy will be amply supported through various other initiatives, including local delivery centers, talent localization, and local market partnerships with consultants and other service providers.

What investment has the company made in Spain in these years and how much employment has it created?

Since the inception of its operations in Spain & Portugal, HCLTech has configured a workforce of more than 750 employees distributed across Madrid, Barcelona, and Lisbon. Its software solutions have already helped more than 25+ clients, and it now plans to grow organically to triple its workforce, up to 2000+ local talent, to become a leading technology provider in Spain & Portugal and a strategic IT partner for organizations in all sectors by 2024. HCLTech nurtures the local talent by investing in training and talent development programs to build skills needed for the digital age.

What is the profile of your clients in our country?

Some of our flagship engagements in the region include a leading global biopharmaceutical company, a leading European multinational digital bank and a Fortune 500 American global corporation.

Do you plan to grow through acquisitions, or just organically?

HCLTech aspires to be the leading technology provider in Iberia and a strategic IT partner to organizations across verticals. Its goal is to expand three times in the next three years and triple its workforce in Spain & Portugal by 2024. In order to meet these ambitions, HCLTech is actively executing its organic growth strategy by creating local sales as well as delivery capabilities. HCLTech has already setup offices in Madrid, Barcelona, and Lisbon supporting multiple global and local clients across their digital and applications, cloud journeys, business process operations and workplace transformation initiatives. We are also launching a Fintech Innovation Lab in Madrid in collaboration with one of our largest banking clients in Europe. Additionally, dedicated nearshore delivery centers in tier-2 cities within Spain & Portugal are being setup in order to suitably address the increasing traction from local as well as global clients. Parallelly, we are also scouting for suitable opportunities for potential inorganic investment/merger & acquisition to set up relevant footprint in the region.
