This is one of the Spanish regions to have done the most to improve the capacity for innovation and technological development of its companies. Castile and Leon is noteworthy for excellent infrastructures which support innovation by providing the material and human materials required for R&D, technology transfer, testing and measurement projects, among others.

According the UN’s Human Development Index, Castile and Leon is among the regions with the best quality of life. Additionally, it ranks highest on the security index for Spain and life expectancy is considerably higher than both the European and Spanish averages.

Seven locations in Castile and Leon have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: Avila, Salamanca, Segovia, Las Médulas (Leon), Burgos Cathedral, the Archeological Site of Atapuerca (Burgos) and the Route of Santiago de Compostela.

Castile and Leon leads Spanish regions in domestic tourism, 50% of Spain’s artistic/historic heritage is located in the region and natural spaces cover 25% of Castile and Leon.
