International investments in Spanish biotechnology exceed 100 million in 2021

Nine companies have attracted funding from investors from Belgium, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Singapore

Spanish biotechnology is still interesting international investors and has attracted more than 100 million. This is according to the 2021 Report by the Spanish Bioindustry Association (AseBio), presented on 7 July at the headquarters of ICEX España Exportación e Inversiones.

The number of capital increases with participation by international investors remained steady in 2021 and, on this occasion, exceeded 100 million euros. There are a total of nine companies, being backed by investors from Belgium, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Netherlands, Portugal, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Singapore.

The most noteworthy transactions were Imidomics, which only involved US investors, and MOA Foodtech and ADL Biopharma. MOA focuses on the production of food from by-products and ADL is a company with a pilot fermentation plant.

Figures related to some of the biotech company acquisitions  were also announced in 2021, such as the acquisition of Sanifit by the Swiss company Vifor Pharma, for 205 million euros upfront, 170 million euros being conditional on milestones and additional payments subject to sales of hundreds of millions of euros.

Other transactions that have been announced include the Biosearch takeover bid by Kerry Iberia Taste & Nutrition (Ireland) for 127 million euros and the sale by Grifols of VCN Biosciences to Synthetic Biologics (USA) for $75 million  (79 million euros). Grifols, meanwhile, completed the acquisition of GigaGen for $80 million (72.7 million euros) and the remaining acquisition of Alkahest for 140 million euros.

In terms of acquisitions for which the amount is unknown, Ardena acquired Idifarma from Navarra, Zendal acquired Laboratorios Ovejero and Becton Dickinson acquired Cytognos. Agomab Therapeutics also acquired Origo Biopharma and AB Biotek Dr. Healthcare.
