"Spain opens the door to a country that has the same vision as NanoFreeze, based on environmental sustainability”

NanoFreeze was created in 2018 by students from the Universidad de Los Andes with the purpose of changing a polluting industry, refrigeration, into a sustainable one for the planet.

The company is formed by designers, scientists, biodesign engineers and professionals who believe that design and innovation are key to creating cleaner, more energy-efficient refrigeration.

Isabel Pulido, Diana Paola Camacho and Laura Camila Calderón are the founders of this company that leveraged several opportunities in 2020 such as the growth of the cold chain market. This became the focus of a worldwide emergency due to the transport of COVID samples and vaccines.

NanoFreeze was introduced to Rising UP in Spain that same year and is now part of its portfolio. The Rising UP in Spain programme from ICEX-Invest in Spain is focused on attracting foreign entrepreneurs who want to get established and grow in Spain. The selected start-ups receive resources to develop their business in Spain.

Who are your customers? What is your business model?
NanoFreeze's customers are companies that transport perishable products in different industries such as pharmaceuticals, floriculture, food, chemicals, veterinary services and healthcare. These customers might be transport and logistics operators or the companies themselves in the above industries that are in charge of refrigerated transport operations.

NanoFreeze's business model consists of creating disruptive, innovative and sustainable solutions for the cold chain and refrigeration.

Why do you want to set up your operations in Spain?
Spain exports a large amount of perishable products that require refrigeration, and it does therefore have a significant global share in this market. It is also a country that could open the door to a continent that has the same vision as NanoFreeze, based on environmental sustainability. We believe that large industries would welcome the products we offer. Spain is also one of the leading countries in nanotechnology, which could strengthen the research and development of new cooling technologies at our company.

What role has ICEX's Rising UP in Spain played in this foray?
The individual mentoring sessions have grounded NanoFreeze's vision of entering this new region; they have also given us certain tools that may be useful at some point in marketing products in this area. The programme also offers the possibility of gaining access to working facilities, which is very useful for us.

What other countries or regions would you like to reach?
NanoFreeze is interested in entering the United States, Mexico and Brazil. These markets have a high cold chain participation.

What are your plans for the future? What are your goals in terms of turnover, financing, growth, etc.?
The company is initially looking to grow in Mexico.

In 2022, we expect to sell up to $300,000. By 2023, we expect to bring new products to the market, such as refrigerated packaging and panels, as well as to start operating in the United States, so we expect to sell up to $1,500,000 that year. From 2024, the company expects to market these same products, but to carry out its expansion plan, growing into regions where market need can be validated.

To undertake this expansion plan and launch new products, NanoFreeze is looking to invest $1 billion mainly in setting up refrigerant production plants in these regions, strengthening the company's team and sales department (sales and aftersales), and setting up its own laboratory facilities.
