Spain in privileged position to attract foreign audiovisual investment

The Spain Audiovisual Hub's second report on the industry highlights the growth of the industry since before the pandemic.

Spain has become a major export hub for film and television products, according to a 2022 report by the US Chamber of Commerce in Spain. This and other documents are cited in the second report on the audiovisual industry, presented by the Spain Audiovisual Hub to analyse the economic and social impact of the audiovisual industry in our country, as well as its possible future scenarios.

The US Chamber of Commerce also highlights "Spain's privileged position to attract foreign investment and promote exports on a global scale, benefiting from its language and strong trade and diplomatic relations, especially with the United States and Latin America." To support this assertion, it compares the growth of film and television, and content investment, with growth in other nearby countries.

Leader in its environment
According to these data, Spain led this selection of countries in 2021, with a 5.7% increase in revenue and a 7.2% increase in content investment. This was followed by France with 4.5% and 4.2% respectively, Italy with 4.3% and 3.5%, and Germany with 2.7% and 3%. The report further highlights the potential of the Spanish audiovisual industry when it recalls that the gap had been even wider before the pandemic.

Employment also benefited from this growth, with a 4% increase in the audiovisual field, creating 76,000 jobs in 2018 alone. Annual increases were particularly significant in the years studied, between 2014 and 2021, with an average annual increase of 7% in film and video production and 5% in television programmes.

Foreign investment
The Spain Audiovisual Hub document refers to other reports, such as the Economic Impact Analysis of the Telecommunications and Audiovisual Content Industries, published by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in this case in 2021. According to this study, foreign investment in the audiovisual industry represented 0.7% of all foreign investment received by the Spanish economy in 2019.

It was precisely in order to attract more investment, from both Spain and abroad, that the government launched a plan in 2021 called "Spain, audiovisual hub of Europe". The goal of this project is to turn Spain into a leading country in audiovisual production, a pole of attraction for international investment and talent, and to generate a reinforced ecosystem of industry and services to export and compete in international markets.

The plan did in particular envisage mobilising 1.603 billion euros of public resources between 2021 and 2025, in order to increase audiovisual production in Spain by 30% at the end of the time frame. In October 2023, the commitment was reinforced with the creation of the Spain Audiovisual Hub fund, endowed with an additional 1.5 billion euros.
