Data4 to build second data centre in Community of Madrid

The French operator will invest 530 million euros as part of a plan in which it will allocate 850 million euros to Spain by 2030

Data4 has designed a growth strategy in Spain that is supported by an 850 million euro investment plan to be implemented by 2030. The first step, announced at the end of April, will be the construction of a data centre in San Agustín del Guadalix, the company's second in the Community of Madrid after commissioning the Alcobendas centre in 2020.

The French operator will invest 530 million euros in the new campus to strengthen its expansion in Spain and its position in the European data centre market. It is at the same time responding to a growing demand for data services. In terms of employment, this will result in over 400 new jobs, which will be added to the over 150 direct and indirect jobs at the Alcobendas campus.

Environmental challenge
The future data centre in San Agustín del Guadalix will have over 16,000 square metres of IT space, distributed across four buildings. It will be equipped with 80 megawatts of total power and 12 megawatts of IT power. Combined with the Alcobendas plant, it will have a total of 130 megawatts of power when it is commissioned.

This type of centre consumes large amounts of energy, so it is a challenge to operate it in an environmentally friendly way. Data4 sees this as a priority and is announcing measures such as achieving maximum energy efficiency and optimising water use. It will also prioritise efficiency and responsible use of materials during the construction process.

Development of the digital economy
The company's Country Manager for Spain, Juan Vaamonde, is enthusiastic about the announcement of the new data centre, and said, “This investment is a further demonstration of our commitment to the Community of Madrid and Spain as a whole, and we are confident that it will contribute to developing the digital economy in the region. Furthermore, having chosen a town like San Agustín, we are particularly excited about bringing innovation and sustainable development to other parts of the region.”

Data4 CEO Olivier Micheli explained, “As part of our ambition to rapidly reach one gigawatt of capacity and become the pan-European benchmark player in the data centre sector, we are also going to build this new sustainable and innovative campus in San Agustín del Guadalix that will benefit both the local and regional community. At Data4, we see great market opportunities in Spain in terms of digital infrastructure.”
